South Denbighshire Community Partnership (SDCP) is a charity based at Canolfan Ni (our centre) in Corwen. They aim to support local people with issues such as rural isolation and poverty, both at Canolfan Ni and further afield.
With rural isolation a problem locally, thanks to support from The National Lottery Community Fund SDCP can support a host of community transport solutions. These are open to be used by everyone, but are vital for older people at risk of loneliness.
The Big Lunch
This community transport supports the weekly lunch club too. Cawl a Chan (soup and a song) is a weekly social where community members get together, share food, play some games and enjoy each other’s company. It was this club that triggered the idea for Canolfan Ni to invite the wider community in for a Big Lunch.
Every Tuesday there are about 40 people who attend a lunch club. It fitted to host the Big Lunch on the same day, it’s mainly older people who attend, but it’s open to anyone and all brought some food with them from sandwiches, salads, pasta, quiches to all sorts of cakes. They put something on Facebook asking if anybody could play some music and a couple came all the way from Liverpool and didn’t want anything in return! They just said ‘we love community events’. They played jazz for us, and we liked it so much that we invited them down again for our summer festival!
'We feel that the ‘buzz’ of The Big Lunch has made people more aware of what’s going on at the centre. It was just a great lovely day, and people seem keener to get involved now they know more about what we’re up to. We’re 100% hosting another Big Lunch next year, I’m going to tell everyone now so we can put the 6-7 June in the diary!'
