Marvellous mulled apple cider

Nothing says autumn like a of warm mulled apple cider, and it’s so easy to make!

This is the perfect mug of comfort, especially after a long weekend walk. If you’d like a non-alcoholic alternative, why not make your own mulled apple juice.


  • 1½l dry cider
  • 7 tbsp Calvados
  • 400ml apple juice
  • 75g dark brown sugar
  • 1 orange, pared into strips
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks, plus extra to garnish, if you like
  • 1 tbsp allspice berries
  • 3 cm piece of fresh ginger, sliced

Have a go at making your own apple juice. Either pop by your grocer and buy local produce, or better yet, if you or a neighbour are lucky enough to have an apple tree in the garden, use up those gorgeous apples.


Pour the cider, Calvados, apple juice and sugar into a large saucepan, and gently heat.
Add the orange zest, spices and ginger and bring to a simmer
Turn down and keep on a low heat for 20-30 mins.
Once you’re happy, ladle into glass mugs to serve and enjoy!
