HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, today Tuesday 13 March, joined school children at Barn Croft Primary School in Walthamstow, East London for a Commonwealth Big Lunch to bring their diverse community together.
Commonwealth Big Lunches, delivered in partnership with the UK Government, build on The Big Lunch that HRH The Duchess of Cornwall is patron of.
Peter Stewart MVO, Executive Director of the Eden Project said:
“HRH The Duchess of Cornwall has supported The Big Lunch as patron since 2013 and every year the initiative has grown, seeing millions of people coming together over a shared meal. Commonwealth Big Lunches expand the potential to connect even more people through food to celebrate their community and commonwealth connections.
In local schools like Barn Croft Primary, and in communities right across 6 continents, events are happening - this year the scale of The Big Lunch will be phenomenal!”
Tracey Griffiths, Head Teacher of Barn Croft Primary said:
“At Barn Croft Primary, twenty five different languages are spoken by almost two thirds of our children, so as an international school with a diverse community, our Commonwealth Big Lunch is an exciting opportunity to celebrate our local and global connections.
All the children and teachers at Barn Croft Primary are delighted that HRH The Duchess of Cornwall has visited today to join in with our Commonwealth Big Lunch.
Millions of people across the Commonwealth are set to come together as part of an international initiative launched by the Prime Minister, created by educational charity the Eden Project in partnership with the UK Government.
The initiative is designed to encourage people to get together to celebrate their Commonwealth connections and community through food as the UK is set to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from 16-20 April 2018.
Lunches of all shapes and sizes are set to take place between Commonwealth Day - and Sunday 22 April. Over the six week period, high profile and diverse events will be held across the Commonwealth, including the Commonwealth Big Lunch at Barn Croft Primary School.
With 2.4 billion citizens across the Commonwealth spanning 53 countries and six continents, Commonwealth Big Lunches will provide a unique opportunity for people to unite over their shared Commonwealth links.
This initiative builds on the Eden Project’s annual Big Lunch, which launched in 2009 as a way to connect people with their communities over a shared meal. It has since seen millions of people get involved, including for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Big Lunch will take place later this year on Sunday 3 June.
