This year marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day, the moment that the guns across Europe fell silent and the war with Germany came to an end. Join us as we mark a moment on VE Day 75!
The original plans for three-days of celebrations and events have had to change due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there are still plenty of activities taking place. We are delighted to be working with VE Day 75 and supporting SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, in their call to join in, from the safety of your own homes, on Friday 8 May.
Please see the official programme below.
Your VE Day 75 'Stay at Home' Big Lunch!
Take your Big Lunch back to VE Day by sharing war-time recipes, playing games and dancing away to a few 40s classics. Here are some top tips and resources from The Big Lunch team for your stay at home celebrations.
Food was simple due to rationing - and some of us may be experiencing a few shortages of certain items right now. There are plenty of family favourites that you could serve at your Big Lunch such as Victorious (eggless) Victoria Sponge, Classic Carrot Cake Traybake and scrumptious sausage rolls.
Music and Games
Get the party going with hits from the 1940s - put together a playlist and have a little boogie.
Playing games together is a great way to connect as a family. Get creative with jumbo chalk and draw a hopscotch on the pavement for passers by to have a go, or why not try a game of tin can alley?
Go all out with fancy dress! We're thinking wartime officer uniforms, pin curls, vintage dresses and dapper suits - whatever you can find or make from bits around the house. It might be a fun change from the lock-down loungewear we're getting used to! You could even hold a 'best-dressed' competition.
Let's not forget the bunting! Put your craft skills to good use and make your own bunting for your VE Day celebration. You can also use scrap card or paper and let the creative juices flow - BBC Local Radio stations are getting behind this with their #GreatBritishBunting initiative. Have a go at making paper chains, flags or customising your own table cloths.
You could use your Big Lunch as an opportunity to fundraise for our Armed Forces, which will provide direct support to individuals in need of physical or emotional care. Find out more about fundraising with SSAFA.
Whether you go the full 1940s theme or would like to keep it simple, get involved and send us your pictures and stories, and don't forget to follow the guidelines and stay safe.
