Tens of millions of people are expected to join in the celebrations for HM The Queen's Platinum Jubilee this year after a record number of Big Lunch events took place last summer.
Nine million people came together last year for physically distanced events in their gardens, local parks, on their streets and even at events held online to bring people together, and 77% of attendees said it was just what was needed after more than a year of Covid (Big Lunch Research 2021).
Her Majesty The Queen was one of the millions of participants taking part when she attended a special Big Lunch at the Eden Project in Cornwall during the G7 Summit. Joined by Their Royal Highnesses The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duchess of Cambridge, HM The Queen launched The Big Jubilee Lunch which will form an official part of Platinum Jubilee celebrations this summer, encouraging people in every neighbourhood across the UK to get together in an act of community, friendship and fun.
The Royal family came together at the Eden Project to meet guests who had been nominated for the work and support they have given to their community in Cornwall, over the past year. The event highlighted the vital role that community connections have played during the pandemic, celebrating the amazing achievements of individuals and groups that knit their communities together.
This year, from 2-5 June 2022, people everywhere will be invited to throw open their doors and take to their streets, gardens and neighbourhoods to share food, have fun and get to know each other a little better with a Big Jubilee Lunch.
Peter Stewart, Executive Director of the Eden Project which is behind The Big Lunch said: 'We're incredibly proud to be part of Her Majesty The Queen's historic Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The nation is ready to get out and celebrate their community connections and Her Majesty has given us a brilliant excuse for a massive nation-wide party! It's going to be the biggest and best Big Lunch ever, so make sure you save the date for your community celebration on the first weekend in June next year."
