The Big Walk - set up a walk in your community

People on a community walk

We all know that getting out and about in the fresh air is good for our health, but it can be good for the health of our communities too.  This May, four teams of walkers are setting off on an epic journey across the UK for The Big Walk, connecting people and communities as they go.

Join in with The Big Walk by bringing people together in your community and popping out for a stroll.  You might make a new connection, develop a friendship or maybe even discover something new about your local area, like an amazing project or group that is making a difference in your community.

Inspired? Here's our top tips for setting up a community walk...

You will need

  • comfy shoes for walking
  • some people!
  • a map of the local area or an idea of where you'd like to explore

Instructions

Invite some walkers

Pop round to your neighbours or invite your local community group to join in on a walk.  You can use local social media groups to spread the word, or ask to put up a poster in a community or leisure centre.

Decide on a route

Decide on a route: this could be around the town, a loop around a park, along a nearby canal or river path, or perhaps a local scenic route.  Check out the Ramblers' handy route-finding tool to help you decide where to walk.

Share your journey

Take a pic of your walk and share on social media using #TheBigWalk - our walkers would love the support!

Search out some inspiration

Behind the scenes, passionate people are making things happen where they live, see if you can find something amazing happening in your community. Beware though, you may find yourself so inspired you want to help out or set something up yourself!

Celebrate!
