Make giant bubbles
Giant bubbles are easy to make and fun to do; a perfect activity for a group of any size! Here's our giant bubbles recipe.
You will need
- 11 Litres of water
- 3 Tbsp baking power
- 1 Bottle of washing up liquid
- 1 Tbsp xantham or guar gum powder (from the health food shop)
Equipment
- A big bucket
- A spoon
- Small sieve
- Cotton string
- 2 pieces of bamboo or dowling
Instructions
Sift the baking powder into the washing up liquid and add the xantham or guar gum – stir until smooth
Add the water a bit at a time whilst trying not to make too much froth
Leave solution to settle for at least 2 hours (once you’re ready to begin give it a final mix)
Make a triangle shape out of the cotton string with the short bit at the top, tape one end of the short string to the top of a stick. Repeat with your second stick then add a weight at the bottom
Soak your tri-string in the soapy solution
Now you're ready to start creating some giant bubbles! Sumberge the string, right up to the handles, in the mixture and slowly lift it up. Gently pull the handles apart, until the strings are pulled tight. Let the wind or a slow movement help a big bubble take shape.
The above recipe is for a giant batch of bubbles, but if you want to make a small batch, here's how:
You will need
- Half a bottle of washing up liquid
- Half a cup of corn starch
- A tablespoon of glycerin
- 6 cups of water
Equipment
- Cotton string and 2 pieces of bamboo or dowling
Instructions
Start by dissolving the corn starch in the water. Add the other ingredients but don't let it froth up too much! Allow it to stand for at least an hour. When you're ready to go, just give it a good stir and blow yourself away with fun!
