Levelling up our communities: proposals for a new social covenant

A report for government by Danny Kruger MP, September 2020

Reactive Statement from Peter Stewart, Eden Project Executive Director and The Big Lunch, the UKs biggest annual get together for neighbours

This year we have witnessed a phenomenal neighbourhood level response to a global pandemic proving the importance of our community connections. Danny Kruger’s report advocating a new social covenant for communities asserts the need for a national day to celebrate our connections.

The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get together for neighbours and communities. Each year on the first weekend in June over 6 million people meet to share friendship, food and fun and celebrate their communities right across the country. The Eden Project initiative is underpinned by the belief that an annual ‘thanksgiving day for neighbours’ will help to build stronger and more resilient communities.

Since 2009, with the support of the National Lottery, we have worked to establish The Big Lunch as the mechanism for people in their communities to meet and get to know one another better. We sincerely hope that the UK government supports the ambition to found a national day to aid our recovery and build happier, healthier communities now and for future generations to enjoy.
