Deep Roots New Shoots

Deep Roots New Shoots is a programme of nature-based play activities for under-5s and their families. The programme initially focused on supporting grandparents who regularly provide childcare for their grandchildren, with weekly sessions and events at the Eden Project.

Eden’s living collection of plants and diversity of experiences was the catalyst for play, exploration, and learning. This summer, under-5s and their families will have the opportunity to take part in our activities as we take a series of eight sessions online! We’ll share activity ideas and songs, with follow-up resources, including props to make, trails to test and song words.

Designed to encourage connection to the natural world, sessions include simple ideas to use as you explore your home or garden or when you’re out and about, getting some fresh air or daily exercise.

These activities support good early years development, focusing on encouraging children to notice and interact with their surroundings, creating shared experiences and opportunities to talk. For more information about Deep Roots New Shoots visit

Join us for four, interactive, music sessions from the iconic Eden Project, with original songs by Matt Douglas inspired by the garden’s plants, architecture, sculpture and wildlife. Spot, listen and clap rhythms and patterns, learn new words and practise counting as you sing-along.

Take part in four sessions where our early years experts share ideas to get under-5s exploring, looking and talking about what they see. We’ll introduce tools for your child, available as downloads, which give a focus and purpose for a trail around the house, in the garden or when walking.

Join Emma Gunn and her four-year old daughter Lowen on a foraging walk and watch them cook together. Foraging enables us to notice, connect and learn about the natural world. Sharing and talking about activities with your child are powerful tools for learning.

Grandad and child

Originally, our programme of nature-based activities allowed grandparents, grandchildren, and volunteers to connect with Eden and each other. Find out more about the programme and why we started Deep Roots New Shoots.
