Dunstable Town Council has been organising a Big Lunch for some of its older residents for several years. The event has proved really popular, bringing around 100 residents together for lunch and an afternoon of entertainment - all provided for free by the council and attended by local organisations and the Mayor.
They had to cancel their Big Lunch in 2020 due to the pandemic, but this year, the council was determined for the event to return, as Jack Adams-Rimmer, Neighbourhood Development Officer explains:
“After the year we’ve just had, everyone is craving some social connection and we really wanted to give our older residents something to look forward to this summer. The Big Lunch is the shining light at the end of the tunnel!
'We thought it better to play safe than sorry, so we’ve decided to organise an online event. That way we know everyone will be able to enjoy the spirit of The Big Lunch from the comfort of their own homes.
'We’ve been using our regular lunch club and check-ins to help our older residents get more tech savvy and even trialled a WhatsApp video call to practice ahead of The Big Lunch! We’re running the event on Zoom, we’ll deliver a simple lunch and programme to everyone attending and we’re also trying to get some Care homes involved - so even more people can enjoy the event, entertainment and activities.
It poured with rain at our first outdoor Big Lunch, but 80 people still took part. People love it, and although things might be a little different this year, nothing will stop us getting our residents together for a good time”.
