We’re inviting you to join us on The Great Big Walk! Connecting people and communities across the UK, we are looking for two walkers who can lead our London route. Starting May 29 in Batley, the walk will span 21 days, arriving in London in time for The Big Lunch on June 18, the highlight of The Great Get Together weekend. Get in quick as applications close Friday 19 May. Apply now!

Group out enjoying a walk.

Starting in Batley, West Yorkshire, our walk teams will sit down for lunch together before heading off in five different directions on a month long adventure. One team will walk to Scotland, one to Wales, one to Northern Ireland, one to Cornwall and one to London, each walking home, back to their communities, in time for The Big Lunch.

Each day, along the route, the walkers will stop in a different community to shine a light on powerfully ordinary people doing amazing projects and events that bring communities together. They will share conversations food, stories and experiences together  just like The Big Lunch!

The aim of The Great Big Walk, made possible with funding from the National Lottery, is to drive awareness of and participation in The Big Lunch and shine a light on ordinary people doing extraordinary things to make a difference where they live.  The walk will highlight the rich diversity of the communities which make up the backbone of the UK whilst demonstrating the commonality we all share.

People can get involved in The Great Big Walk by becoming a walker or walk leader, or joining in alongside  or wherever you live in solidarity if it is not along the main routes. You could join for an hour, a day or a week, you could host one of our visits or provide a lunch for the walkers and of course participate in the biggest community celebration the UK has held since HM The Queen’s jubilee celebration  The Big Lunch on 18 June — as the highlight of The Great Get Together weekend.

Get involved

We are actively seeking two walkers to lead our London route, so if you or someone you know might be interested in taking part, fill out this application form and we will be in touch.

Walker criteria

You’ll need to be physically fit as this will be a hugely rewarding, but also physically challenging and demanding experience. We’re looking for volunteers with interesting stories who can spare as much of the 21 days for the walk as possible, plus some time beforehand for briefings and training. All expenses will be paid and clothing and equipment supplied.

There will be a minimum of two walkers per team so that you can take it in turns to walk, providing rest days and the opportunity to return home if required. The teams, which will also include a driver, a first aider and an assistant, will arrive in a different town or village each day to join that local community initiative or project to share lunch, conversation and to showcase some of the amazing projects you all work on. Walkers must, therefore, be comfortable being interviewed by the media and happy to converse with the general public about their projects and initiatives.

The nitty gritty

Each of our walkers will need to be:

  • physically fit enough to undertake the walk and able to walk up to 20 miles per day, and averaging 12-15 miles per day for an extended period (up to 21 days)
  • mentally resilient to handle being away from home life for an extended period and in the company of a new team
  • able to cope with meeting new people daily and engaging with individuals, communities and show genuine interest in community projects
  • comfortable being interviewed by the media and being filmed for TV and social media — at a human rather than professional level
  • available for all (or the significant majority) of the walk
  • willing to undergo a background and health check
  • willing to take part in local, regional and national promotion and media coverage in the lead-up to, during and after the event, as and when required
  • willing to put on a Big Lunch for your return, in a format agreed upon by The Great Big Walk team.

If you would like to take part in any way, or have questions about how you can get involved, please fill out this application and we will be in touch.
