The Big Lunch is back, and this year it’s not just any Big Lunch, this year is a BIG Big Lunch – and everyone’s invited! From 2-5 June 2022, the Big Jubilee Lunch will be an official part of HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend.

So what is a Big Lunch? It’s an opportunity to get together with your local community to enjoy friendship, food and fun - and they can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

A cuppa over the fence with a neighbour? Sounds great! Sharing a picnic with your local community group? Fantastic! Getting to know your whole road with a street party style Big Lunch? Amazing!

A street party style Big Jubilee Lunch

This summer we’re going to experience a once in a lifetime event with HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, celebrating over 70 years of service.

Street parties have long been associated with national celebrations, and we’re all hoping that this summer will be no different. With an explosion of bunting, we'll gather around tables laden with food to chat, laugh and have fun, and enjoy an air of carnival with games, music, and of course the pageant.

Does this sound like something your neighbourhood would enjoy? If your answer is “yes!” let's get started!

How to close your road

The first thing you’ll need to do is ask permission to close your road, so that everyone can enjoy the celebrations safely.  It’s best to do this as early as possible as some local councils need 6-12 weeks to grant road closures. You can see our top tips on how to close your road here.

Many councils already have information on their websites about applying to close a road for a street party, so that's the best place to start.  They may ask you to check with other residents on the street to make sure there are no objections, and you'll have to complete a form with the details of your Big Lunch but as long as your road isn't a major transport route it should be a smooth process!

Some councils require you to take out insurance cover, if that's the case, we've been working with Creative Risk Solutions who have arranged specialist insurance just for Big Lunch events at special rates. Find out more here.

You may also need to provide a risk assessment (example here) and map, to show exactly where your event will take place, and where you will place road closure signs. Here's an example map and this helpful video from our friends at Playing Out will help you close your road safely on the big day.

We want to help make it as easy as possible to organise your Big Jubilee Lunch. That’s why Eden Project Communities have come together with with partners Playing Out, Sustrans, Neighbourhood Watch and Street Party to ask the Department of Transport to make road closures free and easier for the Jubilee year and beyond. We're recognising all councils that promote The Big Lunch and The Big Jubilee Lunch and waive road closure fees on our Platinum Councils List - so take a look and let us know if your council should be added to this list!

If you're having any problems trying to close your road, please get in touch and we'll do our best to help. Get in touch at communities@edenproject.com
